Your chance to get involved in a Parkinson’s Study.

The New Zealand Brain Research Institute (Christchurch) needs our help to fight Parkinson’s.

We are a group of researchers based in Christchurch at the New Zealand Brain Research Institute (NZBRI) and University of Otago.

We invite you to participate in our research project entitled ‘New Zealand Parkinson’s Environment and Gene Study’ (NZPEGS).

The project aims to identify key genetic and environmental factors contributing to Parkinson’s in New Zealand. To achieve this, we will be collecting DNA for genetic analyses and detailed occupational, medical and lifestyle histories from people with Parkinson’s and related disorders (MSA, PSP, CBS). We will also be collecting this information from control participants free of brain disorders.

Data collection for the study will be primarily completed online through a series of questionnaires and a video interview with study staff. We will also send you a ‘study pack’, which will help with the collection of a DNA sample (from saliva) and provide you with a smell test to complete.

We recommend using a desktop computer, laptop, or tablet for the completion of the online questionnaires. If you would like to participate but do not have a suitable device or internet connection, please contact us and we can arrange for paper copies of the questions to be mailed to you.

If you would like to participate, please visit Links to complete the consent form online and start study participation are at the bottom of the page.

If you have any questions or encounter any problems, please do not hesitate to contact us via email at or by phone 0800 119 814.

If you know others with Parkinson’s that might be interested in the research, please feel free to pass this information on to them.

Thank you for considering taking part in this research.
